Job Description

1. Position Summary

The Junior Lab Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the coffee quality control and trading laboratory. This role is essential for maintaining the accuracy and efficiency of coffee analysis, including cupping preparation, sample management, and general lab maintenance. The assistant works under the direct supervision of the Senior Trader and the Specialty Coordinator.

2. Key Responsibilities

The primary duties of the Junior Lab Assistant include:

  • Sample Management:
    • Receive, log, organize, and label incoming green coffee samples according to established protocols.
    • Manage the inventory of all samples, ensuring proper storage and easy retrieval.
    • Prepare and ship samples for external testing or client evaluation.
  • Sample Preparation and Analysis Support:
    • Perform meticulous preparation of coffee samples for quality assessment, including roasting (using a sample roaster), grinding, and precisely weighing coffee doses for cupping.
  • Laboratory Maintenance:
    • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the lab space, including all cupping bowls, spoons, grinders, roasters, and countertops.
    • Ensure all lab equipment (e.g., moisture meters, scales, grinders) is properly calibrated and functioning.
    • Manage and track inventory of lab supplies (e.g., sample bags, filters, cleaning agents) and notify the manager when supplies need reordering.
  • Data Entry and Documentation:
    • Accurately record and input data from physical analysis and cupping sessions into the lab's tracking software or database.
    • Prepare basic reports and summaries of analytical results as directed.
  • Client and Visitor Support:
    • Assist in the preparation and execution of cupping sessions for internal team members and international coffee buyers and clients.
    • Ensure the cupping lab is presentable and all necessary materials are available for visitor sessions.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Food Science, Chemistry, Agriculture) is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory, quality control, or food-related environment is advantageous but not strictly required.
  • Basic knowledge or a strong enthusiasm for coffee is essential.
  • Prior training in barista or roasting skills will be advantageous.

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous and highly focused on accuracy, especially in weighing and data recording.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent ability to manage a high volume of samples and maintain a clean, orderly workspace.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and efficiently manage time to meet daily preparation deadlines.
  • Teamwork: A proactive and supportive team player, willing to take direction and assist colleagues.
  • Basic Computer Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) or data entry software.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to lift and move boxes of coffee samples.
  • Ability to lift and move 20lt bottles of water regularly.
