Job Description

The Senior STEM Project Editor works collaboratively with the Executive Program Manager ensuring the overall health of their projects including strategic, long-term planning; market and competitive analysis; continuous courseware and publication goals; and a focus on addressing customer needs in both our digital and print programs, ensuring that project and market needs and requirements are represented to our digital product group as we build digital products for the discipline. The Senior STEM Project Editor applies expertise in cultivating relationships, an understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with publishing on schedule and on budget, and is able to work effectively with others, including Production, Digital Product and Technology/Engineering to implement strategies to transition the list from print to digital with an emphasis on enhancing learning. The Senior STEM Project Editor is responsible for managing project schedules; working with the program director to guide revision and development decisions on products, coordinating all phases in an assigned product’s life cycle, and supporting products through collaboration with other divisions.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage initiatives for relevant titles and projects, contribute to strategy across those projects and course areas, work with program director to help determine how educational trends will affect current and inform future strategy.
  • Support digital transformation through participation in initiatives with the Product team, and Media and Assessment Editorial (which may include but is not limited to participation in Achieve working groups, building Faculty Advisory Boards, attending planning meetings with Product, development of learning objectives frameworks as applicable, and planning migration of content with media and assessment team).
  • Ensure that publication of relevant discipline products are timely to market, competitive, and creative. This includes determining schedules with authors and production while communicating progress to the program director and other team members.
  • Serve as the primary contact for our authors, content developers/advisors, and resource team members. Develop relationships with potential authors, reviewers and members of the discipline community.
  • Recruit reviewers, thought leaders, faculty advisory boards and key decision makers and plan the development of products in the portfolio.
  • Work with the program manager to research, plan, and execute the development and integration of multimedia-based teaching and learning resources to provide for a robust program.
  • Develop plans for a competitive digital portfolio that allows for future innovation.
  • Consider Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in all aspects of program management and innovation, working to ensure that students of all backgrounds and experiences can see themselves in our products. Utilize editorial tools and resources and attend workshops and training to support Macmillan Learning’s DEI values.
  • Take lead on the author relationship for assigned projects, and serve as the primary decision maker on questions and issues related to each project in the assigned portfolio with assistance from the Program Director.
  • Communicate frequently with and accurately translate the author’s vision of the project to the production team and members of the media editorial team.
  • Regularly update author concerning the status of the project, and support instructor through each phase of the editorial process (such as providing them with instructions for reviewing page proofs).
  • In conjunction with Program director, manage and serve as the strategic decision maker for assigned projects to accurately evaluate, identify and address existing and potential budgetary issues, obstacles, and opportunities to optimize the health of the projects.
  • Work closely with the Program Director and other partners to analyze and synthesize information to understand issues, risks, identify options, and support sound decision making.
  • Use data, analysis of markets and trends, and insights from sales, marketing, and finance to determine appropriate sales forecasts and pricing strategies.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • 3+ years' experience in publishing/learning company or higher education teaching experience
  • Experience with educational technology and ability to work cross-functionally with media and product teams.
  • Experience applying excellent written & verbal communication skills and strong presentation skills with a variety of audiences.
  • Very good editorial judgment and skill.
  • Excellent project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple ongoing projects, to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to delegate and benchmark effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to form productive, collaborative working relationships with authors, author teams, and in-house teams including marketing, content and assessment development, media editorial and production.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Apps.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience.
  • Degree in STEM field.
  • Higher level degree.
